The annual Valentine Cup ball hockey game returned to St. Mary’s University after a year’s hiatus with a thrilling game that saw the student team overpower the St. Mary’s staff and faculty team by a score of 5-2.
It appeared that the weather would play a significant impact on the game but the rain held out just long enough for the two teams to leave it all out on the court in front of the Valentine family, Paul, Shirley and Ted Valentine and members of St. Mary’s staff and faculty.
“It was nice to see the turnout of interested participants this year,” said Nathan Ruff, Sports Manager with St. Mary’s University. “To be able to have a little celebration like this to thank the Valentine family for all of their support of St. Mary’s is always great.”
Led by an amazing performance by Ashton Sequeira in goal, the student team endured a hard fought first half, only to run away with the game during the final 15 minutes.
St. Mary’s Bookstore Manager Mike Clark and Facilities Manger Eddy Souriol mounted sustained pressure in the second half but could only manage to sneak two behind Sequeira.
“It’s all in good fun,” joked Clark, “but we want to bring the Valentine Cup back to the staff and faculty. Perhaps next year we will need to have a couple of practice games before hand.”
The festivities didn’t end on there as for the first time ever, St. Mary’s hosted a 3k ‘Fun Run’ that saw entrants race a three kilometer course around the St. Mary’s campus while getting bombarded by colour bombs.
While the wind had picked up during this portion of the day’s events, it didn’t stop the 20 plus runners from getting out on the course.
Clouds of blue, yellow and red were spotted on various parts of campus as runners passed stations occupied by St. Mary’s SLC volunteers who were all too willing to douse the runners in the colour-bombs.
“We expanded the festivities surrounding the Valentine Cup as a way to engage more of the campus community,” explained Ruff. “I thought it was a great turnout and am already thinking of ways that we can build upon the success from this year going forward.”
