St. Mary’s Indoor Track Team Makes Great Strides
The St. Mary’s Indoor Track Team completed its second year of ACAC Indoor Track competition at the ACAC Championships March 15-16, hosted by SAIT at Repsol Sport Centre. St. Mary’s athletes had many personal best performances and Rebecca Johnson and Tim Evans led the way for the Lightning.
Johnson placed 4th in the 3000m, the best placing by a St. Mary’s athlete to date in any event, improving her personal best by 20 seconds. She also scored team points in both the 3000m & 1500m races.
Tim Evans placed 15th in the 300m and 10th in the 600m, leading the men’s team. The men’s 4 x 400 relay team of Quinn Demers, Jason Sprinkhuysen, Tim Evans and Isaac Amsing placed 8th, to score a team point.
Bethany Topping, Sophia Della Rosa, Jason Sprinkhuysen, Karen Vandenborre, Gabriel de Obieta, Kim McEwan, and Rebecca Johnson all ran personal best times in events at Provincials.
Head coach Donna Dixon is pleased with the progress the team made this year.
“Most of our athletes are new to Indoor Track training and racing and put in excellent work to consistently improve and perform well at the Championships,” said Dixon. “We were fortunate to have experienced track coach Rohan Simms join our coaching staff this season and provide great guidance to our sprint athletes. We plan to build on our work this year to continue to improve next season.”
St. Mary’s University Sports Manager Nathan Ruff is encouraged by growth of the Indoor Track team in only its second year of competition.
“We made some great strides as a program this year,” said Ruff. “It’s encouraging to see the runners achieving personal best times as well as the increased participation in Track by St. Mary’s students.”
