The tradition of rich colour on vellum and paper has given us stunning examples of imagery and letter forms. Illuminated manuscripts from all traditions and time periods give us an extraordinary array of inspiring work to consider for study and interpretation. In this 1-day session, you will paint a decorated initial letter using gouache and egg glair. The richness of gouache on paper, and the option to thin it to look like subtle water color give artists a myriad of opportunities for bold and more subtle work.

Participants will use a letter they design and bring to the workshop or choose a design Suzanne has provided. Adding egg glair to the gouache mixture allows artists to use it in ways unique to the medium, offering unique effects.

It is possible for you to couple this session with the gilding class, working on a single piece, or 2 distinct designs.

Suzanne Moore is one of 3 Americans on the team who created contemporary interpretive illuminations for The Saint John’s Bible, the Wales-based project led by Donald Jackson. Commissioned by the Abbey at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, this is the first hand-written and illuminated Bible created in 500 years.

This series is subject to minimum enrolment.
