St. Mary’s University is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Karim Dharamsi, Ph.D., as the St. Mary’s University Dean of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Dharamsi will join the University in July, prior to the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year. This important appointment is the culmination of a rigorous search superbly conducted by our search committee and we are grateful to the members of the search committee for their excellent work on behalf of the University and for their successful efforts to recruit Dr. Dharamsi.
Dr. Dharamsi brings to St. Mary’s the wealth of post-secondary experience that we sought, as well as administrative and operational strengths. Dr. Dharamsi served as Professor of Philosophy and Chair of General Education at Mount Royal University (MRU) in Calgary, Canada. At MRU Dr. Dharamsi was helping to build the liberal education mandate which infuses every degree at MRU. Through his guidance as Chair of General Education, a position he held for 10 years before joining St. Mary’s, Dr. Dharamsi has helped to develop a large and vibrant community of scholars and researchers from almost all of the university’s disciplinary areas.
“Dr. Dharamsi brings with him extensive experience in the liberal arts and sciences, including organizing an international conference and publishing a series of books arising from the conferences,” said Dr. Tara Hyland-Russell, Vice-President Academic at St. Mary’s University. “He is an experienced administrator, with a strong background as Chair, General Education, at Mount Royal University, that includes program development and assessment, budgeting, and faculty mentorship among many other skills.”
“We look forward to welcoming Dr. Dharamsi to campus and working with him to build on our teaching and research excellence and enhance our reputation.”
Dr. Dharamsi has a deep commitment to service and to the value of St. Mary’s mission. Hallmarks of his career have been his commitment to diversity, to mentoring, and to finding meaningful avenues for cross-disciplinary collaboration.
In addition to his administrative gifts, Dr. Dharamsi also draws upon years of experience as a teacher and scholar committed to undergraduate education. He has published articles in the philosophy of history, on the philosophy of R.G. Collingwood, Wittgenstein, Frege, the philosophy of education and liberal education.
Our collective goal was to attract a dean with the capacity to help St. Mary’s reach the exciting and ambitious future that we envision, and to strengthen our position as one of the leading destinations for a liberal arts and sciences education.
Please join us in welcoming our new Dean of Arts and Sciences and in thanking the search committee members for their excellent service.
