Pope Benedict laid out his plan for the ongoing renewal of understanding of the Liturgy in the foundational work,
The Spirit of the Liturgy. In this book, then Cardinal Ratzinger offers an aid to the understanding of faith and to the
right way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy. In 2007 in Rome, a group of priests, senior
architects and artists within the Church, using The Spirit of the Liturgy as the key text, developed a Masters
program to train contemporary artists and architects in the grand tradition of Catholic art and architecture.
Martinho Correia attended the program in 2009-2010 and in this illustrated talk will speak about sacred art,
the Masters program and his thesis, “The Resurrection in Art and Liturgy.”
Martinho Isidro Correia is a graduate of the University of Calgary (BFA, 1990) and UBC (BEd in Art Education, 1993)
and began his career teaching art in the Calgary Catholic School District. In the late 1990’s, seeking to broaden his
skills as a painter, his interest deeply rooted in traditional painting, Martinho left home to learn the traditions of the
craft in the historical heartland of classical figurative painting, Florence. In Florence, he discovered the Angel
Academy of Art, the school of Michael John Angel, a leading realist painter who had studied with noted Italian
master portrait artist Pietro Annigoni. After graduating, Martinho spent several years instructing at the Academy.
In 2010, Martinho completed his Masters in Architecture, Sacred Art and Liturgy from the European
University/Pontifical Athenaeum, 'Regina Apostolorum' in Rome. Martinho has work in the Vatican, as well as in
private collections in Italy, England, Portugal, Colombia, and Canada.
